OECS JUNIOR PAN COMPETITION
JUDGING CRITERIA


ARRANGEMENT                                        40


Introduction:
The ability for the arranger to compose an appropriate introduction for the calypso chosen as the prepared piece. (10)

Re-Harmonization:
The ability of the arranger to re-harmonize the calypso chosen as the prepared piece. The re-harmonization could be limited to one specific section or could be applied to the most of the arrangement. (10)

Melodic Development:
The ability of the arranger to embellish/solo on, and utilize rhythmic variations of the melody in the arrangement. (10)
 
Motivic Development:
The ability of the arranger to take a melodic motif(s) of the calypso and effectively utilize it (them) during the arrangement.

GENERAL PERFORMANCE                          40


Interpretation:
The ability of the band to creatively execute the arrangement with all the nuances therein. This includes the initial appropriate melodic and/or harmonic statement of the calypso, and development of the arrangement to climatic points. (10)

Dynamics:
The effective execution of crescendos, contrasts, phrasing, and other musical expressions in the arrangement. (15)

Balance: The ability of the band to distribute their instruments on stage to allow for the best possible audio reception by the judges. (10)

Costume:
The effective use of costume and general performance of the band and the creativity and delivery of the song. (5)

TONE                                      10
Blending of Pans:
Blending is the overall tone/color of the pans, (5) including the consistency of tuning within the steel band. (5)


RHYTHM                               10

Application of Rhythm Section:
The ability of the arranger to effectively utilize the engine room — drum set, congas, iron-beaters, and applicable percussion instruments — during the performance. (5) Also, the ability of the entire steel band to maintain a consistent rhythmic flow throughout the performance. (5)
