Making Poverty History.
United Kingdom - The sixth annual British
Association of Steel bands’ Pan Explosion competition will be staged in
Portsmouth this year on Saturday 5th November 2004 (Guy Fawkes Night) at
the at the Pyramids. As the skies are lit up with fireworks to celebrate
Guy Fawkes, equally the Pyramids Hall will be filled with a wealth of
quality steelband music. Loxford Pan Ultimate steelband will entertain
patrons before the start of the show. In 2005, BAS is supporting the
Making Poverty History Campaign at all their events.
The British Association of Steelbands (BAS) is proud to have initiated and
developed this competition. Its concept is to encourage younger players
under the age of twenty-five for the ensembles competition and thirty for
the soloist’s competition. 2005 being the fifth year the soloist’s
competition is in existence.
The objectives of the competition are to
• Encourage younger players to develop their arranging and performing
skills.
• Encourage the composition and production of compositions written
especially for pan.
• Provide an environment in which the talents and dexterity of young
players can be displayed.
Entry is open to all members and member bands of BAS. Each competing
Ensemble comprising of no more than six players is required to perform two
selections in any musical style. One piece must be an original (own
composition written by individual(s) aged twenty five years or younger and
the other being a tune of choice. Both selections must include a pan solo,
to be clearly identifiable within the arrangements.
Earl Rodney, the grandfather of steelpan, who is currently based in Bath
and working with Rainbow Steelband will open the show. The soloist
competition will follow with four competitors vying for the coveted title.
Real Steel orchestra will entertain the audience before the start of the
ensembles competition which will see six bands in fierce musical battle to
capture the Pan Explosion 2005 title.
The MC on the night will be none other than BAS Chairman, Pepe Francis
with DJ Sugar K of Unique FM 102.2 pumping out sweet pan and soca music
all night. Judges on the night will be Gerald Forsyth, Princess Rollock
and Daniel Louis.
BAS looks forward to hosting and supporting yet another highly charged and
competitive explosion of pan revealing the innovative skills and talents
of the many young pan musicians aspiring to explore the vast avenues of
musicianship available to them.
