New York is, after all, the entertainment, media and financial capital of the world. The Big Apple always sees itself as a global artistic and cultural leader. And as quietly as it's kept, the steel orchestras of New York have been spear-heading and carrying the flame for the most vibrant, inventive, creative and socially significant music performing arts-based movement in the USA. The challenge in 2007 is for the managements of the New York steel orchestras to get their act together, and secure not only competent leadership, but also an able and progressive producer/promoter who can deliver the goods and take advantage of the vast talent the young people possess, in a time when NY is culturally and financially flourishing.

                                                                       Full Story

We even took the then-veteran Trinidadian entertainment editor Terry Joseph by utter surprise, and he remarked in one of his columns 'how shocked he was after getting home from the Savannah' to find full coverage, with audio clips, pictures and articles awaiting him on the internet. That simple move changed the concept of time in which the world has become accustomed to having the results available after the panorama competition. Of course, now wireless internet access is commonplace even at the Savannah, and we were occasionally able to publish live from the event a couple of years later.

                                                                       Full Story

The 2007 panorama champs played De Fosto's Pan Lamentation as their tune of choice, while Phase II used their arranger Len 'Boogsie' Sharpe's original composition Sharing Licks. This event was historic on many levels; it was the first panorama held outside of the traditional venue of Queen's Park Savannah in Port-of -Spain - Skinner Park in San Fernando, south Trinidad. Additionally, the first prize payout was one million TT (USD 159K) to the winning band. Total prize monies for the 2007 Panorama season will be in the millions of dollars tt when all summed up.

In the medium category, Sound Specialists of Laventille came from behind to secure that division's first place position with a score of 279. Favored Tobago-based band Dixieland who led the pack going into the finals, had to be satisfied with, what had to be for them, a disappointing fourth place. Defending champions Sforzata were prevented from scoring a hat trick with a 2007 win, and finished in third place overall.

                                                                       Full Story

Olbia is situated in northeastern Sardinia and means a "happy town" (città felice). In the 60's, Olbia underwent a real demographical boom and extensive tourism development of the area. Nowadays, the city's population is over 50,000 and extends over a surface bigger than the city of Sassari - the capital of province. This expansion has been achieved thanks partially to Olbia's harbour, which has become the most important port for passengers in Italy, and partially because of its international airport. Olbia is not only a destination for vacationers passing through the Costa Smeralda (Emerald Coast); it has become a true tourist location able to satisfy even the needs of the most demanding.

                                                                            Full Story

Trinidad - The positions being stated by certain steelband leaders about the Panorama Finals being held in Skinner’s park in San Fernando do not surprise me one bit. Being around the movement as long as I have and listening to some of the leaders talk in public and in private, I knew that steelbandsmen were still in a dogfight and it will take us some time to rise to the occasion. What is this occasion? Steelbands have become big business all over the world except in T&T. Today people are leaving universities and joining the steel pan industry, making it their career. But here in the land of its birth we fighting year after year over a competition that is taking us nowhere. It’s a dead end situation.

It is time we look rationally at the real position in which we find ourselves. How many bands really benefit from Panorama? After six to eight weeks of sacrifice the majority of steelbands end up down-spirited and dejected in their panyards long before Ash Wednesday.

                                                                            Full Story

The face of pan is getting younger and more diversified. Furthermore the talent and skill level are increasing sharply. When Steel Talks (WST) has been fortunate to be able to communicate and meet with people from all walks of life (professionals, hobbyists, pan 'lifers', beginners, educators, students and fans), who are connected to the steelpan instrument and are literally from almost every sector of the world. All have in common, an undying enthusiasm for the instrument and art form.

                                                                            Full Story

On panorama night, the late great Clive Bradley made history by achieving a feat never before accomplished. The bands for which he arranged placed first and second. Sadly, the joy would later turn to grief with the tragic news of his passing less than three months later.

Basement Recordings Productions presents NY Panyards 2005 which includes the final panyard recordings of Master Arranger Clive Bradley. The interview is historical, prophetic, educational and at times emotionally gut-wrenching, as we listen to and experience the humor, knowledge and fascinating episodes in the life of Clive Bradley that the master himself shares with us. That it takes place only a few weeks before Mr. Bradley pulls of one of his career's greatest musical feats, make this interview all the more remarkable. It takes place at Basement Recordings studios where almost every prominent, notable - or soon to be - steelband music figure has graced.

NY PANYARDS 2005 is part of the continuing series of stellar video and audio recordings by Basement Productions that provide a historical, educational and cultural perspective - without diminishing the entertainment value and musical integrity of the performers and performances.

NY Panyards is ideally suited for music educators, students, ethnomusicologists, music libraries, fine music collectors, historians and steelpan enthusiasts who are looking to experience authentic, passionate steelband performances without compromise as endorsed, validated, created and performed by the masters.

NY Panyards 2005 captures the spirit, pressure, fire and joy, and creative genius born out of the necessity of panorama competition, as can only be experienced within the sacred refuge of the steelbands and steelpan musicians - the "panyard". Basement Recordings again captures the sonic and visual components of the performances with unmatched clarity and fidelity, bringing the viewing and listening audience into the bowels of the New York panyards in a manner that allows you the reality of tasting and 'living' the panyard atmosphere and experience.

Indeed, it is a remarkable people who consistently overcome outside despair and hostility with the unique ability to conquer and transform their environment into a musical oasis (the panyard). Located in Brooklyn, New York, Meyer Levin's student body put on an event chock full of music and dance. A program displaying the talents of the Mixed Chorus, Senior Concert Band, Sixth Grade Chorus, dancers, and steelbands from the school's sixth, seventh and eighth grades, along with the Higher Levin Steel Orchestra - played to an auditorium with standing room only. Proud mamas and papas, along with family, friends and well-wishers had turned out in force for this particular calendar event. The Master and Mistress of Ceremonies for the evening were principal Edward Gentile and assistant principal Denise Holder (pictured), respectively. For those who were savvy enough to put the weekend event in their calendar, they came out winners all the way. As one attendee was overheard commenting after the show "I didn't intend to come. I was not coming at all. But I am so glad I made the effort! It was fantastic!" The lady in question was merely giving voice to what surely must have been on the lips and in the minds of others who took in the concert.
