hile the world is in a global rush to embrace the steelpan musical instrument on unprecedented levels of acceptance not experienced before, Trinidad and Tobago, the home and birthplace of this profound musical invention continues to exhibit what can be termed schizophrenic behavior, with the instrument. Sunity Maharaj (editor of the T&T Review and Director of the Lloyd Best Institute of the West Indies) brings the issues of this love/hate relationship that foster everything from neglect, ambivalence, rejection, contempt, to unbridled pride and passion, to the forefront - in her article Above all, The Steelpan.

This evening's Sing Off Christmas show was okay and enjoyable. It featured past Sing Off champions from season one and two - Nota and Committed, along with this season's champion Pentatonix. Other groups also participated. On the joint performance of the classic 'Ooh Child' by Afro Blue and Committed, judge Ben Folds' comments - 'I think everyone, not even so secretly, looks up to you two groups as the standard. You guys are absolutely amazing.' A severe case of too little, too late - you think?

Much congratulations to third-season Sing Off winners - Pentatonix - they are a great group with extraordinary music acumen. With a cash purse of $200,000.00, they are now also Sony Music recording artists - with their contract in hand as part of the Sing Off grand prize. However, we're still singing 'the Afro Blues.'

On last night's episode of NBC's THE SING-OFF, Afro-Blue became the most recent group to be eliminated from the competition. On numerous occasions these judges essentially said that this group, Afro Blue, was operating above their [the judges'] heads musically....In this regard there were many similarities to the Trinidad and Tobago panorama competition.
