PORT-OF-SPAIN. TRINIDAD: The season premier of
Parang and Steel staged by former Pan In the
21st Century victor Silver Stars Steel Orchestra
on November 15, had all the nuances for a great
production.
Scores of music lovers turned out at the band’s
Tragarete Road, Newtown, Port-of-Spain,
headquarters for another night of fine musical
performances from the cast which included parang
group Fuego Caribeno, Baron (Timothy Watkins)
and host Silver Stars.
The 19th annual edition of Parang and
Steel—dubbed the biggest steelband event held
this time of year— continues every Saturday
until December 13, at Silver Star’s
headquarters.
A programme of activities held between November
1-8, to mark Silver Stars 60th anniversary, it
seemed, had not affected energy levels among
pannists, judging from the band’s vibrant
performance.
The band’s repertoire incorporated styles that
ranged from Broadway and pop music, while Fuego
Caribeno and Baron filled the evening’s
programme with Christmas music.
An added feature on the night was the
presentation of the inaugural Player of the Year
Award to Silver Stars vice-captain John Lopez.
The Player of the Year accolade was
conceptualized and sponsored the band’s
foundation members who returned to Trinidad and
Tobago for Silver Stars’ 60th anniversary
celebration held at the same venue.
Many of this country’s most influential figures
made Parang and Steel the event of choice for
their weekend enjoyment and they weren’t bereft
of quality entertainment.
Attorney General Bridgid Annisette-George and
husband Newman; Law Association President Martin
Daly and wife Kavita; Alvin Daniell, chairman of
the Entertainment Company of T&T; Andre Monteil
former financial comptroller at CL Financial; as
well as Miami based producer Vincent Di
Pasquale —who worked for artistes such as
Madonna, Mariah Carey, Missy Elliot and Justin
Timberlake—were on location to experience an
evening of local culture.
