St. George’s, Grenada, W.I. - The Steel Pan was in the spotlight last Saturday as a very exciting weekend of sweet pan music started the build up to Spicemas and Panorama 2009.   The 2009 Bomb Tune competition that formed part of the Panorama Launch produced a show of extremely high standard, and an astounding turnout of patrons.  The Tivoli Hard Court in St. Andrew’s was the venue that played host to the eight steelbands which will compete in the 2009 Panorama finals on Saturday August 8th at the country’s National Stadium.

The ‘Bomb Tune’ competition saw bands playing old Calypso favorites such as Cybert’s “August Is the Time,” Inspector’s “No Place Sweeter than Home,” “Power in The Soca,” Ajamu’s “Party” and “African Lady.”  The enthusiasm from the audience and the skill and youthful exuberance displayed by the players, speak to the possibilities for the further growth and development of the steelband movement in Grenada.

Performing an Andy Chichester arrangement of August Is The Time,  Republic Bank Angel Harps came out on top.  They were followed by New Dimensions and Rainbow City All Stars, respectively.

Though originally finishing in second place with 253.5 points, Suzuki/Foodfair Pan Wizards playing “Power In The Soca” were officially disqualified from the competition for reportedly taking the stage with a complement in excess of the 25 players agreed to by the Grenada Carnival Committee and the Grenada Steelband Association prior to the competition.

The Bomb Tune competition was adjudicated by a panel of local judges who were guided by the same criteria that will be utilized in next month’s panorama competition.
