Boston’s
youthful
steel
orchestras

are a fan of
steelpan
music and
youth
initiatives.
You are in
for a treat,
and have the
opportunity
to support
young
musicians at
the same
time by
attending
the 7th
Annual
Concert of
Steelbands.
Justin A.
Petty is the
music
director and
arranger for
several
steelbands
in Boston,
and is
extremely
excited
along with
the
musicians
about the
upcoming
show.
The
steelband
concert is a
joint
venture
between John
J. Smith
Lodge #14
and John J.
Smith
Chapter #3
as a way of
showcasing
the musical talents of
the area’s
young
students
within the
community
whose
skills and
music
literacy have
been
cultivated
by using the
steel drum
as the
primary
instrument,
and
simultaneously fascinating
them with
the
culture and
musical
phenomenon
that is the
steelband.
Boston
Public
Schools
Citywide
Steel
Orchestra,
St.
Cyprian’s
Celestial
Infernos
Youth
Steelband
- both of
Roxbury, and
Dorchester’s
very own
Pan
Xpressions
Steelband
and
Branches Pan
Groove
Steelband
(pictured),
along with
Crystal
Pan Jammers
Youth Steel
Orchestra
of Lynn will
all take the
stage in the
steelband
show which
gets
underway at
2:30 in the
afternoon.
This
gathering
will proudly
display the
area’s
cultural
diversity
and
evidence community
outreach.
Proceeds
from the
concert
contribute
to the
funding of
academic scholarship
programs of
both the
Lodge and
Chapter for
deserving
students. Scholarship
presentations
are made at
the Prince
Hall Family
Scholarship
and Awards
Day program
in June.
For the
concert, the
steel
orchestra
performances
will include
musical
works of Alicia
Keys, Andy
Narell,
Gloria
Estefan,
Jasmine
Sullivan, Jennifer
Hudson and
Mozart - in
addition to
both the
National and
Black
Anthems, the
Hallelujah
Chorus,
gospel,
jazz, merengue,
pop and
other
contemporary
pieces.
Topping the
event off
will be a
finale
performance
of ‘Happy
Birthday’ by
three of the
steel
orchestras
in
recognition,
tribute and
celebration
of the 10th
anniversary
of North Shore
Caribbean
Association
Crystal Pan
Jammers.
Trinidad and
Tobago’s
New
York-based Consul
General Dr.
Harold
H. Robertson
has been
invited to
attend the
steelband
concert.
