 Spring & Steel come together
in 7th Annual Concert
featuring Boston’s youthful steel orchestras

Boston, Massachusetts, USA - Dorchester, Boston is the place to be on Sunday May 3 if you are a fan of steelpan music and youth initiatives. You are in for a treat, and have the opportunity to support young musicians at the same time by attending the 7th Annual Concert of Steelbands.  Justin A. Petty is the music director and arranger for several steelbands in Boston, and is extremely excited along with the musicians about the upcoming show.

The steelband concert is a joint venture between John J. Smith Lodge #14 and John J. Smith Chapter #3 as a way of showcasing the musical talents of the area’s young students within the community whose skills and music literacy have been cultivated by using the steel drum as the primary instrument, and simultaneously fascinating them with the culture and musical phenomenon that is the steelband. Boston Public Schools Citywide Steel Orchestra, St. Cyprian’s Celestial Infernos Youth Steelband - both of Roxbury, and Dorchester’s very own Pan Xpressions Steelband and Branches Pan Groove Steelband (pictured), along with Crystal Pan Jammers Youth Steel Orchestra of Lynn will all take the stage in the steelband show which gets underway at 2:30 in the afternoon.

This gathering will proudly display the area’s cultural diversity and evidence community outreach.  Proceeds from the concert contribute to the funding of academic scholarship programs of both the Lodge and Chapter for deserving students.  Scholarship presentations are made at the Prince Hall Family Scholarship and Awards Day program in June.

For the concert, the steel orchestra performances will include musical works of Alicia Keys, Andy Narell, Gloria Estefan, Jasmine Sullivan, Jennifer Hudson and Mozart - in addition to both the National and Black Anthems, the Hallelujah Chorus, gospel, jazz, merengue, pop and other contemporary pieces.  Topping the event off will be a finale performance of ‘Happy Birthday’ by three of the steel orchestras in recognition, tribute and celebration of the 10th anniversary of North Shore Caribbean Association Crystal Pan Jammers.

Trinidad and Tobago’s New York-based Consul General Dr. Harold H. Robertson has been invited to attend the steelband concert.  Venue is the William E. Reed Auditorium, Prince Hall Grand Lodge, 24 Washington Street, Dorchester, Massachusetts, USA.
