Pan Month Celebration Continues With Host Of Activities

Trinidad & Tobago, W.I. - Pan Trinbago continues to celebrate Pan Month with a host of activities. Starting with the discussion, ”Pan, Progress & Patent” on Tuesday 19th August at the AV Room, NALIS, Abercromby Street, Port of Spain, Trinidad - the seminar will touch on crucial issues pertaining to the steelpan. Speakers are Dr. Everard Byer, Godfrey Joseph and Byron Serrette. The event is open to the public. Duration is 4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Next is the ever-growing “Pan on D’Avenue III” hosted by the Woodbrook/St. James Community Association on Saturday 23rd August from 6:30 p.m. with a cultural presentation at Adam Smith Square. The event is staged in celebration of 100 years of the City of Port of Spain, the Anniversary of the country’s Independence and in recognition of the National Instrument, the Steelpan. The parade route is east along Ariapita Avenue between Taylor and French Streets. Thirty-five bands on decorated trailers will participate, pausing at Adam Smith Square to play their tune of choice before moving along. Additionally, twelve top arrangers - Dr. Jit Samaroo, Leon “Smooth” Edwards, Len “Boogsie” Sharpe, Earl Rodney, Robert Greenidge, Pelham Goddard, Duvone Stewart, Terrance “BJ” Marcelle, Ken “Professor” Philmore, Ray Holman, Lennox “Bobby” Mohammed and Earl Brooks will receive awards. Also receiving awards are Edwin Pouchet (posthumously), Michelle Huggins-Watts (first Female Arranger to win Panorama), Desmond Waithe and Steve Achaiba.

Tuesday 26th August is the day selected by the Pan Association to pay tribute to its pioneers and celebrate the winners of two major events i.e. the National Steelpan Music Festival – Pan Is Beautiful XII and Panorama 2014. The ceremony takes place at Naparima Bowl, San Fernando, from 7:30 p.m.

The action remains in Trinidad’s southland as the South/Central Region hosts Panchutca 2014, a competition with the focus on chutney soca music. Fourteen steelpan ensembles of 15-20 players each will be vying for a total of TT $.5m in prizes. The winner will also take home the Massive Gosine Roving Tent Challenge Trophy. Recognition will be paid to Sundar Popo and Ras Shorty I (Garfield Blackman), exponents of the chutney soca artform. Panchutca 2014 - under the patronage of The Prime Minister Hon. Kamla Persad-,Bissessar takes place on Saturday August 30th at Petrotrin Sports Club, Guaracara Park, Point a Pierre, from 8:00 p.m. Admission is TT $100.

The month’s calendar winds up with a series of brunches at a number of panyards/theatres including Carib Woodbrook Playboyz, White Oak Starlift and CAL Invaders on Independence Day, August 31st, from 7:00 a.m.

“Independence Fiesta” staged by the organization brings down the curtain on Monday 1st September. Further details will be revealed in a subsequent release.
