“The Bradley Years”
The
Bradley Years represent the definitive collection
of steelband music arrangements and performances
for a large steel orchestra. This collection
showcases seven classic arrangements from the
master arranger Clive Bradley. Bradley
is considered to be the best steelband music
arranger ever by many, including his peers.
In addition, the arrangements are performed
by one of the finest steelbands in the world,
New York’s Pantonic Steel Orchestra. Clive Bradley
had a very special relationship with Pantonic.
This orchestra clinched the title of panorama
champions five times in seven years - performing
Bradley’s musical works. The performances
were captured by Basement Recordings days before,
and in one instance, mere moments before they
took the stage for the prestigious annual steelband
music panorama competition.
The recordings capture,
reproduce and present an unrivalled clarity
with sonic realism, of a large steel orchestra
fielding between one hundred and one hundred
twenty musicians - unlike any other steelband
music recordings in its class.
This body of musical work is a sterling addition
for all fans, educators, players, historians
and fine music collectors.

July 30 - The
‘Pan Buzz’ to date: Steelbands must
commit to Music Festival
|
Trinidad
& Tobago, W.I.
- Every time the Steelband music festival comes
around I am filled with trepidation. Now - you
might ask how a fearless man like Pan Buzz could
be filled with fear. It has to do with the poor
turn-out and the lack of commitment of
government agencies - The Ministry of Arts and
Multiculturalism, the Tourism Development
Company and hypocritical panmen, who prefer to
smoke a “10-piece” (weed) than support the
festival. And that’s not all; the big bands, by
their very selfish attitude, have contributed
significantly to the demise of the Festival.
Two big bands that could make the festival a
thing of beauty, WITCO Desperadoes and Neal and
Massy Trinidad All Stars - both past winners -
have been ducking the Festival for flimsy
reasons. My spies tell me the prize money is not
attractive as the National Panorama’s, hence the
reason panmen are reluctant to participate.

sweat...
sauna-like

and
Steelbands.
That was
the
combination
within

past
Saturday.
And it
played
out in a
scorcher
of a
session
in terms
of music

literally.
Pan,
Pan, and
more
Pan. So
much so,
in fact,
that
players
who
performed
are
still
half-jokingly
referring
to the
launch
as
ť“Despers’
semi-finals”
- an
obvious
tongue-in-cheek
reference
to
Trinidad

annual
Panorama
semi-finals.
That is
in
itself a
mega
marathon
of Pan
performances...

exactly
did you

you
would
consider
not

missed

Pulling
up out

one
could
tell
immediately
that
there
was a
good
time to
be had.
In the
shadows
of the

further
deepened
by the
surrounding
trees,
could be
heard
the
sound of
laughter
from
guests
gathered,
some
seated,
others

Charles sets Kaiso in age
of elegance
|
Global
- ....Charles, who grew up in Diego Martin and
Glencoe, blew his first note on a trumpet given
to him by an uncle when he was ten, its golden
shine playing across his face—a portent for the
future. Coming of age as a youngster, he
treasured a paltry few records by pianist Monty
Alexander, who is featured on the album, and
Grammy-winning trumpeter Wynton Marsalis, a
friend and mentor today. But it was a seminal
textbook on Phase II Pan Groove’s jazz harmony
and language that provided a scholarship of
sorts when he had turned 13.
“Pan was most important in my musical training,”
Charles said. “The yard teaches you to memorise.
Besides, Boogsie’s stuff is jazz with a
Caribbean beat.”

Copeland is not a tuner
|
Tobago, W.I.
- Ace Tobago pan tuner and former Pan Trinbago
president Patrick Arnold has added his voice to
the raging G Pan controversy.
Late last week Attorney General Anand Ramlogan
had threatened to take legal action against Prof
Brian Copeland who claimed to have invented the
G Pan. The Attorney General said legal
proceedings would be initiated by the government
against Copeland and others for marketing the G
Pan as their own and making profits from the
venture.
Arnold, who has himself been a long outstanding
pan tuner with a big international reputation,
has been exporting pans to different parts of
the world.
“It was Tony Williams, the former Pan Am North
Stars captain who introduced the 4th and 5th
style of pan tuning which revolutionised and
standardised the notes arrangements on the steel
pan instruments,” Arnold said.
....Arnold dropped a shocker
when he revealed that Copeland is not a pan
tuner. Copeland was given the nation’s highest
award under the regime of former Prime Minister
Patrick Manning.

Courts Babonneau Steel
Orchestra Wins Big in Panorama
|
St. Lucia, W.I.
- For the first time ever St. Lucia crowned two
Panorama champions, becoming only the second in
the world to do so. After two years hiatus,
Panorama was back on Friday July 15, setting the
Beausejour Cricket Grounds alight with heart
stopping arrangements, beautiful choreography
and colourful costumes.
Five large and three small bands beat their
hearts out to claim the fame of 2011 Panorama
champions.
At the end of the night it was a double victory

Rhythm & Blues and Reggae
Rock Despers USA Pan Loft
|
New York, USA
- Another weekend is upon us, but pan folks are
still talking about their experience last
weekend, conceptualized and brought to life by
Despers USA. On a sultry Sunday evening, ‘R&R’
was not for ‘rest and relaxation.’ Rather it
signified that R&B and Reggae ruled and rocked
the Pan Loft of Despers USA, as the panyard of
one of New York’s veteran steel orchestras is
affectionately known. A great evening with a bit
of humidity was the backdrop for some very good
steelband music provided by four of the region’s
top music organizations.
An event with a difference, it was a daring move
by the younger members of Despers USA’s
management team - that of having only R&B and
Reggae - sans soca - reign supreme for several
hours.

LIME Presents the Most
Exciting Night of St. Lucia Carnival 2011
|
St. Lucia, W.I.
- Panorama is back, and with LIME’s support,
it’s guaranteed to be one of the biggest and
most spectacular pan extravaganzas to be staged
in St Lucia for a long time.
Eight bands are down to perform at the event
scheduled for Friday July 15th at the
Beausejour Cricket Grounds. They include three
in the Small Bands category and five in the
Large Bands category. It’s the first time that a
category has been created especially for small
bands.
LIME is, and has been a major sponsor of
Panorama and has provided cash contribution of
$10,000 towards the event. The company has been
a loyal supporter of Panorama and steel band
music in St Lucia for many years, as well as a
title sponsor of LIME Diamond Steel, St Lucia’s
most celebrated pan orchestra.

July 14 - The
‘Pan Buzz’ to date: G-Pan giving me
a gripe
|
Trinidad
& Tobago, W.I.
- Let me make myself clear, all the facts are
not in so I won’t rush to judgment. As the old
people would say, I won’t drink my coffee hot.
But surely the Pan Buzz will raise a few things
that have weighed heavy on the mind regarding
the G-Pan and its funding fallout now sweeping
the Pan world.
I am not afraid to say that
is years I have been urging governments (past
and present) to get involved in Pan technology,
which I call Pan’s final frontier. Now former
Prime Minister Patrick Manning take the basket,
not because of Pan Buzz hailing him as the
greatest non-playing captain of the steelband,
but he recognized the need to brand Pan. Now If
every Tom, Dick, Harrilal and Dhanolal want to
claim Pan as their own it is fine by me;
Trinidad and Tobago will always be the Mecca and
mother of the steelband, fullstop.

New Dimension Steel
Orchestra Captures 2011 Grenada Bomb (Popular)
Tune Title
|
Grenada, W.I.
- Eight of Grenada’s top steel orchestras vied
for the coveted “Bomb Tune” competition title in
what was one of the closest competitions in
years. In this hotly contested event that
unfolded Friday July 1 at the Tanteen Netball Court in the
country’s capital of St. George’s, a meager half
of a point separated the eventual winners New
Dimension Steel Orchestra - with a score of 268
points - from its closest rival Angel Harps
Steel Orchestra who garnered a score of 267.5.
Angel Harps were the defending “Bomb Tune”
champions. Using a three-judge system, the
maximum possible score achievable was 300
points.
Under the rules of the
competition an orchestra was allowed to perform
a popular, none-calypso song.

Steel band set to bring
the Caribbean to Gibraltar’s Ocean Village
|
Gibraltar
- Denmark may be far from tropical, yet it has
produced one of the finest steel bands on the
circuit – the “Steel Hammers”. Having toured
across Europe, the 12-piece ensemble will be
bringing a flavour of the Caribbean to
Gibraltar’s Ocean Village on Monday 18 July at
9pm. Make your way to Leisure Island and let
your imagination drift off to a sun-soaked
Caribbean Island…
Hailing from the Allerřd Music School, in a
small Danish town just north of Copenhagen, the
Steel Hammers are a young, energetic group with
an average age of just 26. Covering a wide
repertoire of calypso, cha cha, mambo and more,
you’ll recognise some of your favourites from
Santana to Stevie Wonder and even Jean-Michel
Jarre played out on authentic acoustic steel
drums.

G-pans not sold anywhere
|
Trinidad & Tobago,
W.I.
- Former Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry
of Culture, Junia Regrello, yesterday denied
that Genesis Pans also called G-pans, since
being launched in 2007, have been sold locally,
or internationally, as is now being claimed by
Attorney General (AG) Anand Ramlogan.
At a news conference held at the Skiffle Bunch
Pan Theatre on Coffee Street, San Fernando, the
former San Fernando West Member of Parliament,
said he was willing to meet and speak with
Ramlogan to clear up his misunderstanding of the
issue.
Regrello said there is much confusion, as the
People’s Partnership does not have anyone within
the Government with an in-depth knowledge of
pan.
Regrello said, “I don’t want to tell the
Attorney General to leave pan alone, but he
should be a little more understanding because
this is a very touchy, very sensitive project.”

G-Pan Musical Instrument
Patent - Steelpan - Brian R. Copeland - Trinidad
and Tobago
|
Global
- An ensemble of acoustic steelpan musical
instruments, being an innovation which
significantly improves upon traditional acoustic
steelpan prior art. Said improvements include an
extension of note range across the assemblage of
G-Pans, a substantial reduction in the number of
steelpans required to effectively cover the
steelpan musical range, the use of a compound
design whereby individual component parts of the
instrument, specifically the playing surface,
chime, rear attachment, or skirt and the playing
stick or mallet, are optimized for their
specific function, the application of a variety
of techniques for eliminating or reducing,
non-musical sympathetic vibrations and the
inclusion of a variety of mechanical and
acoustic resonator designs, to enhance
optimally, the sound projection of the
aforementioned instrument.

Pan finds a new groove
US citizen takes
instrument to another sphere
|
Trinidad & Tobago,
W.I.
- Perfect pitch, goes a musician joke, is
throwing the banjo in the dumpster and hitting
the accordion. Seriously, though, it’s a perfect
combo when Jonathan Scales throws in the banjo
with the double second pan, considering his hard
inquisitive compositions on his latest CD,
Character Farm & Other Short stories. Scales, an
American whose only Caribbean gene is our
national instrument, has been pushing a radical
departure from pan music in its 70 years of
evolution from the bamboo, sweet oil tin and
biscuit drum project, to today’s curious and
refreshing galaxy of steely notes. Scales, 26,
studied composition for saxophone at Appalachian
State University in Boone, North Carolina. But
he’s been hooked on pan since the day a friend
steered him to the university pan side.

Rosedale’s steelpan band
(yep, you read right) is taking its chops to
Italy
|
Ontario, Canada
- The figure supports a modern stereotype: a
lone teenager hunched over an iPad, tapping
away. But the melodic, rhythmic ringing coming
from the tablet suggests 17-year-old Patrick
Dollard is not lost to the world because of
texting or gaming. On the screen is a circular
array of oval-shapes, an app of a steelpan drum.
The tablet’s tiny speakers are, it turns out,
well suited to recreating the metallic sound
that is so evocative of Caribbean islands, where
steelpans were first banged out of oil drums.
This weekend, Mr. Dollard will be travelling to
Italy with 19 other teenaged members of the
Toronto All Stars Steel Orchestra (TASSO). They
will be the only steelpan band at Festival
Orchestre Giovanili, a 10-day classical music
event where conventional orchestras with as many
as 90 members will put on concerts in Rome and
Florence.

AG claims national
scandal in G-Pan, PHI sale
|
Trinidad & Tobago,

- Attorney General Anand Ramlogan has described
allegations surrounding the ownership of the
patents and intellectual property rights of the
G-Pan and PHI as a national scandal amounting to
fraud.
A probe by the Office of the Attorney General
has revealed that the G-Pan and the Percussive
Harmonic Instrument, which is commonly called
the PHI Pan, are not owned by the Government.
At a news conference, AG Ramlogan said a
pre-action protocol letter has been sent to
Steel Pan Initiatives Chairman, Professor Brian

nation’s highest honour registered the PHI Pan
in his name back a few years ago, and has been
marketing the G-Pan internationally and possibly

spread blankets and relax while listening. This,

from all other events. He promises what is in

particularly as he presents his “Tappin 2 Tuk”,

BS&T and NCF Launch Pan

|
Barbados,
W.I.
- Pan Pun de Sand has been growing over eight
years and for seven of those eight years BS&T
has been pleased with the relationship it has
cemented with the NCF and being title sponsor of
the spectacle. These were the sentiments
expressed by Mr. Anthony King, Chief Executive
Officer of BS&T as he welcomed journalists and
friends to the BS&T Pan Pun de Sand Media Launch

7th.
Mr. King pronounced himself a ‘big fan’ of the
event which draws thousands on the Brandon’s

fact that more and more people are coming in
support of the family oriented entertainment.
Attributing the popularity of pan in Barbados to
the developmental work of the NCF, the BS&T Head
lauded the work of the Government agency and the
efforts especially of Ms. Karen Pestaina of the
NCF, who has worked on Pan Pun De Sand from its
inception.

Grants keep steel pans
popping
|
Wisconsin, USA
- For 80 years, the La Crosse Community
Foundation has given money to local groups to
make La Crosse a better place. This year, the
foundation designated $80,000 from its general
fund to be used as Birthday Money grants.
....instead of celebrating with cake and ice cream,
they bought washers and dryers for the Salvation
Army, contributed to McGilvray Road Bridge
restoration, bought a new industrial stove for
St. Luke’s Methodist Church’s free Monday meals,
and bought steel pans for the Coulee Region
Steel Band.
If you don’t know what a steel pan is, Jim
Knutson would like to change that.
He’s the one who asked for the money for the
steel pans, and with the help of the La Crosse
Symphony, which has nonprofit status, he got
them.
Don’t worry. Even though he
doesn’t have nonprofit status, Knutson and his

Music Message Board is Open
on the Ning Network |
Some of the most important, controversial,
thought-provoking and enlightening discussions on
the steelpan instrument, music and culture worldwide,
have taken place over the years on the When Steel
Talks “Message board.” Considered by many
to be a lightening-rod for change in the steelpan
music community, the WST message board has
provided a means unlike any for steelpan enthusiasts
to share information and communicate ideas.
Windows MSN
Groups has informed us that they are shutting down
their groups service as of February 21, 2009.
You can now find the When Steel Talks Group at
whensteeltalks.ning.com/forum
We look forward to you joining us.
