“The Bradley Years”

The Bradley Years represent the definitive collection of steelband music arrangements and performances for a large steel orchestra. This collection showcases seven classic arrangements from the master arranger Clive Bradley.  Bradley is considered to be the best steelband music arranger ever by many, including his peers.  In addition, the arrangements are performed by one of the finest steelbands in the world, New York’s Pantonic Steel Orchestra. Clive Bradley had a very special relationship with Pantonic.  This orchestra clinched the title of panorama champions five times in seven years - performing Bradley’s musical works.  The performances were captured by Basement Recordings days before, and in one instance, mere moments before they took the stage for the prestigious annual steelband music panorama competition.

The recordings capture, reproduce and present an unrivalled clarity with sonic realism, of a large steel orchestra fielding between one hundred and one hundred twenty musicians - unlike any other steelband music recordings in its class.

This body of musical work is a sterling addition for all fans, educators, players, historians and fine music collectors.

Mosaic Steel Orchestra Rocked City & Sand for 2012

Mosaic. Image provided by and copyright (NCF) National Cultural FoundationBarbados, W.I. - Mosaic Steel Orchestra of Barbados did not disappoint when it came time for their appearances during 2012 Crop Over festivities earlier this year. They were in focus on the Pan in the City and the Pan Pun de Sand stages in Bridgetown and Brandon’s Beach.

After a teaser in Pan in Black on the night of Crop Over Friday, Mosaic headed to Bridgetown on Saturday to set Independence Square on fire, and did just that with a 12 piece Pan-round-the-neck band. With popular tunes from calypsonian Red Plastic Bag and other artistes, Mosaic led hundreds of Pan fanatics around the square in a mass congo line.

South panists treated badly at NAPA opening

(Commentary)

San Fernando, Trinidad & Tobago, W.I. - I am writing to let you know that the opening of NAPA South was a crying shame and insult to the steelpan fraternity of San Fernando. This was not a multi-cultural opening but rather a bi-cultural programme of only singing and two dance performances.

I am of the opinion that it is either the organisers of this programme just do not like the steelpan or they did not think our national instrument was worthy of the gracious stage of NAPA South.

These people should be dismissed from any future cultural event planning as they clearly show no respect for the other aspects of culture such as our steelpan, literary foundation and the talented disabled persons, to name a few.

....Speaking of South pan fraternity, I don't believe there were any present. Were they invited?

Bringing a piece of the Caribbean to Campus

Keene State College’s Faculty Recital entitled “KSC Caribbean Night,” with Murray Mast, James Walker, Christopher Swist, Don Baldini, and Julian Gerstin on September 21, 2012

New Hampshire, USA - Every instrument is a piece of history—but some instruments possess a story that is more intriguing than others. Around 1900, the British government ruled the island of Trinidad, an island populated mostly by African descendants.

The government feared that a population so large had potential to overthrow the government. As a result, the British government decided to stop a musical uprising before it happened. All musical instruments were banned, but the government would loan out musical instruments if you received approval.

What the government didn’t realize was the role that music played in Trinidad’s culture. This led to the invention of the steel drum. In 1939, around the time of World War II, the steel drum was born.

The Genius of Woman On The Bass

Three stars align to bring new definition to longevity

Annie Lopez - the Woman on the Bass

Global - ....The principal protagonist in this bluesy soap opera, The Woman on the Bass, Town say, lives incognito, but many regard her as a dream vision.

....Who’d believe that a few years earlier, a few of your colleagues in Sforzata would treat you like a dree-vay? Shucks, when you turned up for practice, they’d mumble, “Look trouble come.” You, a bass player? Not if we can help it. Tough to make the Panorama side if the bass lines are dribbled out to you as though from the nipple of a baby bottle.

How’d you channel such embarrassment? It drove you up the steep incline to the Desperadoes pan yard. Smack into manager Rudolph Charles’ den of master panists..

Stella Maris Steel Band is a ‘Pantastic 10’

Members of the Stella Maris Band rehearse for Pantastic 10, their 10th anniversary concert which will be held at the Courtleigh Auditorium on September 29 starting 7 p.m.

Jamaica, W.I. - The Stella Maris Steel Band is making preparations to host its 10th anniversary concert. The band, which boasts being the first and only Catholic steel band in the island, has 20 members and, according to band manager Margeret Rhoden, the future should see growth.

The band received its first batch of steel pans from an anonymous Trinidad donor several years ago. Rhoden says what started out as casual music lessons, grew into a professional charity-driven musical band.

"We do work for charity and that is a major part of why we are members of the band. The only challenge is that we don't have steel band tuners in Jamaica, so we have to send to Trinidad to get the pans tuned and that is very expensive. Currently, we can only manage to get them tuned once per year, because it is about US$60 per pan and we have 20 members," Rhoden said.

Renegades Vacation Youth Music Camp to Set Stage Towards Healthier Minds Through Arts and Entertainment

Renegades YouthTrinidad & Tobago - Back in the 1960s-1970s, the second president of the then Steelband Association, the late George “Sony” Goddard made a series of attempts at getting the nation to buy in to the arts as an artery for positive and meaningful life, but that was never to be as music – integral to arts and entertainment – pursued as a career, more so, pan as a structured activity on the school curriculum, was taboo.

Rita’s a woman of steel

Fire up: Trinidadian tin [sic] drum player Rita Seethaler helps her central Victorian community heal through music.Victoria, Australia - This is a story that starts in Switzerland, touches on the Caribbean and finishes in central Victoria.

It is a story that, despite great tragedy - the Black Saturday bushfires - has a happy ending.

And it all revolves around one woman: Rita Seethaler.

Growing up in Switzerland, Rita had - incongruously - been a long-time performer of Caribbean tin [sic] drum music.

But it was only after she fell in love with an Aussie, moved to Taggerty, in central Victoria, and lived through Black Saturday, that she truly saw the healing power of Trinidadian tin [sic] drums.

"I felt individually and also collectively after Black Saturday the community was in a pitch black pit where we couldn't get out," says Rita.

"I thought we need healing and peace ... Intuitively I thought the drums could be something that brings us together, that eases the pain. Because I know when I play and I'm not well I get better instantaneously or it hurts less."

Personal note below, from Rita Seethaler:

“I've been alerted by Trinidadian friends of mine in Australia that there is an article displayed on your website from the Australian News Paper " The Weekly Times" of September 19, 2012. This article talks about the story of the Victorian Bushfires 2009 and our music therapy project using the steelpan.

“Unfortunately, the journalist didn't bother showing me the article before it went to print. And I was mortified to read words like "tin drum" and "tin drum music" - terms, I never used in that interview.... Sigh .... I sincerely apologise and hope no one is offended by this poor terminology.

“Anyway - I would like to express a big thank you to Trinidad & Tobago for having invented the steel pan, such a fabulous instrument that gives joy to so many people around the world and that connects players of all ages and all backgrounds with each other.

“For us it was and still continues to be a true blessing, for it has helped us deal with all the trauma and hardship following the 2009 Bushfires in Victoria, Australia. After the huge emptiness of a town in ashes, the steelpan has given us a new sense of community, a new sense of life.”

Easton Drum Band Looks to Grow

Caribbean Steel Rhythms would like to open a school in Easton

Drummers Gillian Salandy, Charlene Aldrin and Janae Salandy perform with Caribbean Steel Rhythms

Pennsylvania, USA - This doesn't seem like your typical garage band.

First off, the members range in age from 8-year-old Leah Salandy, who doesn't seem tall enough to reach her instrument ("I need a stool," she admits) to Selwyn Salandy, who is a father and grandfather.

The band is gathered at his house in Bethlehem Township, in his garage, but this is in no way a "garage band."

Caribbean Steel Rhythms, a steel drum band made up of about a dozen Easton area residents, has been playing together for years, forming in 2007 out of the Chirst United Methodist Church on the city's South Side.

The Steelpan - National Instrument of Trinidad & Tobago - Official Statement from Pan Trinbago

Trinidad & Tobago, W.I. - Pan Trinbago has taken note of the renewed call by some in our society for another National Musical Instrument. We have seen the various opinions expressed and as the Governing Body for STEELPAN, we here state our position on the matter.

In order for an instrument to be considered to be a National Musical Instrument, it should be (a) indigenous to the country and (b) musical i.e. able to play the songs of the country.

We know of no other musical instrument in Trinidad and Tobago that satisfies these two (2) criteria other than THE STEELPAN.
