“The Bradley
Years”
The
Bradley Years represent the definitive collection
of steelband music arrangements and performances
for a large steel orchestra. This collection
showcases seven classic arrangements from the
master arranger Clive Bradley. Bradley
is considered to be the best steelband music
arranger ever by many, including his peers.
In addition, the arrangements are performed
by one of the finest steelbands in the world,
New York’s Pantonic Steel Orchestra. Clive Bradley
had a very special relationship with Pantonic.
This orchestra clinched the title of panorama
champions five times in seven years - performing
Bradley’s musical works. The performances
were captured by Basement Recordings days before,
and in one instance, mere moments before they
took the stage for the prestigious annual steelband
music panorama competition.
The recordings capture, reproduce
and present an unrivalled clarity with sonic
realism, of a large steel orchestra fielding
between one hundred and one hundred twenty musicians
- unlike any other steelband music recordings
in its class.
This body of musical work is a sterling addition
for all fans, educators, players, historians
and fine music collectors.

Song for Panorama 2014
“Mr. Pan”
sung by “Tunapuna
Scanty”
&
composed by Miguel Reyes
|
Global
- It’s another season of
collaboration with songwriter and panist Miguel
Reyes, for calypsonian “Tunapuna Scanty” as he
returns for Panorama 2014, lending his
vocals to Mr. Pan penned by Reyes.
Music lovers and pan aficionados alike would
remember 2009 as a marquis year for Reyes with
Bandoleros vocalized by “Tunapnua Scanty”
- a familiar voice on the music scene both in
Trinidad & Tobago and New York.
In true kaiso form in the
song Mr. Pan, the request goes out to
‘standardize your pan’ - a clarion call that is
repeated time and again by some in the Pan
community both in the land of its birth, and
abroad.

Sparrow through the eyes of Indo-Trinidadians
By Raffique Shah
|
Trinidad & Tobago
-
ONE had to be there, meaning anywhere in
Trinidad and Tobago, to understand the impact
the Mighty Sparrow's "Jean and Dinah" had on
calypso as an art form when The Birdie sang that
song in 1956. I was just 10 years old when it
hit the airwaves-well, on the two radio stations
we had at the time-but I remember it as if it
were yesterday. My only recollection of a kaiso
that had had a similar appeal was Blakie's "Steelband
Clash", the Road March in 1954. But whereas
Blakie had everyone chipping and chanting his
"Mama, when de two band clash, If you see
cutlash (sic)"-I can still hear the notes being
played by Sunny Side Kids of Freeport-Sparrow
triggered a virtual revolution with "Jean and
Dinah".
One could sense then that unless he was a
flash-in-the-pan, here was a man who was
destined to alter calypso forever. From
schoolyards to playgrounds, boys and girls sang
"Jean and Dinah", even though as children we
hardly understood the theme of the song. And I'm
writing about little Indian boys and girls,
Africans (negroes, in those days), Chinese,
everyone. But while we the young ones found it
infectious, and older fans thrived and wined and
did whatever else to the jumpy beat of the
calypso, not so our parents, especially older
Indians.

America's Got Talent on the Brooklyn Steel Side
Brooklyn Steel Orchestra comes together for AGT auditions
|
New York, USA
- In an ‘on the spur of the moment’
collaborative effort, some of Brooklyn’s finest
steelpan musicians came together for a special
project. That project being vying for a spot on
America’s Got Talent. Early in the week When
Steel Talks (WST) almost simultaneously got a
heads-up from both Travis Roberts and Kern Simon
(who took the idea to reality literally
overnight) about the venture. WST was invited on
a couple of nights to check out their practice
sessions. Travis and Kern moved the project
deliberately and immediately into reality while
avoiding the pitfalls that have scuttled many
other steelpan music efforts in New York.

Revisited - The 1953
Dial Records of Carnival Music in Trinidad
by
Dr. Donald R. Hill, Professor of
Africana/Latino Studies and Anthropology
|
Global
- When Aubrey “Bolo” Christopher, of
Christopher Brothers Cycle and Radio Services, 7 Nelson Street, Port of Spain,
Trinidad, met with Ross Russell, President and sole owner of Dial Records of New
York, to record calypsos, steelband music, and other Carnival and religious
music in late February and early March 1953, they ushered in a new era in the
commercialization of Trinidad’s Carnival music.
The Dial 10” long playing albums were the first LPs recorded
in Trinidad. They were marketed in the United States where a steady supply of
78rpm records and a couple of long-playing records by Trinidadians, North
Americans of West Indian descent, and other North Americans fed a calypso boom
that had been incubating since the late 1930s.
In Trinidad, Christopher marketed some of the DIAL recordings
on the red 78rpm Calypso label. Christopher and Edouard Sa Gomes were the only
Trinidadians making records between 1950 and 1954 and few other recordings were
made between the end of World War II and the middle 1950s when the Mighty
Sparrow burst on the scene.

“In Meh Band”
sung by Irving “Mr.
Lonesome” Boiselle
& composed by Miguel Reyes
|
Global
- Composer and panist Miguel
Reyes who shares the same hometown with the late
Aldwyn Roberts aka Lord Kitchener is from
Arima in east Trinidad. Recognition in his
homeland came Miguel’s way in 2009 when his
acclaimed ‘pan tune’ Bandoleros.
International acclaim via New
York was just a few months away when two veteran
and world-renowned steel orchestras Despers USA
and Sonatas also opted for Bandoleros as their
panorama tune of choice. Once again Bandoleros
would become a champion selection in the hands
of Popwell, as he delivered yet another winning
arrangement, this time with and performed by New
York powerhouse Sonatas.
Miguel Reyes (at right in the
picture, with vocalist Irving “Mr.

music, and for the 2014 Panorama season unveils

Sarah’s spotlight: MUSC123 Beginning steel
band
|
Delaware, USA
- College is all about
experimenting, right? I believe our college
years are the perfect time to explore
academically, socially and creatively. I’ve done
my best to step outside of my comfort zone and
try new things since coming to the university.
Most recently, I tried (and enjoyed) fried
plantains, despite having a sincere hatred for
bananas. This experimentation can be as simple
as trying new foods. Or, if you’re up for the
challenge, you can be bold and commit to a new
experience for a full semester by enrolling in
an academic class.
I dove
into Kristian Paradis’ MUSC 123: Beginning Steel
Band without having any prior steel band
experience. For example, I learned on day one
that the instruments aren’t called steel
drums—they’re steel pans. The first few days of
class, before we started playing, were full of
learning the history of the instruments in steel
bands and their cultural significance to
Trinidad and Tobago. We have continued to
connect our music to history as the semester has
progressed, but it was during these early
classes that I realized how important these
instruments are. I don’t bang on a hunk of metal
with a pair of wooden sticks. I make music with
an instrument that keeps the stories the
Caribbean alive.

Concert provides cultural experience
|
West Virginia, USA
- With
bellowing percussive impacts, students
boisterously expressed their appreciation for
and interest in music from around the globe
Friday night at the Lyell B. Clay Theatre in
West Virginia University’s Creative Arts Center.
....The first ensemble was an island affair. The
participating students came together to create a
surprisingly melodic product on their steel
drums. It was an interesting musical revelation
for the crowd to hear music not originally
intended for the instruments being played.
They even
played a steel drum arrangement of The Beatles’
“When I’m 64,” and also a Latin Cha Cha number
called “Cha Cha Sandwich.” Most of the music
originated from the Caribbean places like
Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago.

Tobago All Stars Steelband which once proudly

John, a

young group and the audience marvelled at its
skill with this difficult music. As the applause

PAN - International
Focus on The New Musical Instrument of the
Century
Editor-in-Chief: Leslie Slater | Senior
Associate/Executive Editor: Dalton Narine
|
Global - When
you mention the names Les Slater and Dalton
Narine one automatically thinks of journalistic
integrity, professionalism, intellect,
historical accuracy and know-how on the highest
level.
Long before PanOnTheNet.com and When Steel Talks
there was PAN Magazine. Created by these two
stalwart journalists and pan historians - Les
Slater and Dalton Narine - it was a literary
masterpiece that the steelband music community
has not seen since. Pan was much more than a
quality publication - it was a living
amalgamation of the experiences, expectations
and vision of panmen, through the eyes of panmen,
with distinguished journalist acumen.
When Steel Talks salutes Les Slater and Dalton
Narine for their creation of a Pan publication
that has withstood the test time in terms of its
impeccable historical value, accuracy and
uniqueness. The rich stories and historical
importance of PAN magazine is required reading
by any steelpan player and/or enthusiast.

Music professor develops steel drum band in
Israel
|
Delaware, USA -
Traveling with 24 cases of musical instruments
in a foreign country was not an easy feat, says
Music Professor
Harvey Price, who returned last
week from his trip to Israel. Price boarded the
plane to Israel with so many instruments because
he is starting a steel drum band there for
Jewish and Arab students.
Since
Israel was established in 1948, there has been
tension between Jews and Arabs over territory.
Price says he started this band because he
wanted to unite students from different
religious groups and change their outlook toward
one another.
“It could
be a really amazing movement, or it could impact
20 or 30 kids every year, so that would be great
too,” Price says. “The idea is to get a group
going probably in a year or so that is capable
of touring and showcasing the idea that Arabs
and Jews can work together and create music.
They’ll play concerts in Israel and Europe and
the United States.”
