“The Bradley
Years”
The
Bradley Years represent the definitive collection
of steelband music arrangements and performances
for a large steel orchestra. This collection
showcases seven classic arrangements from the
master arranger Clive Bradley. Bradley
is considered to be the best steelband music
arranger ever by many, including his peers.
In addition, the arrangements are performed
by one of the finest steelbands in the world,
New York’s Pantonic Steel Orchestra. Clive Bradley
had a very special relationship with Pantonic.
This orchestra clinched the title of panorama
champions five times in seven years - performing
Bradley’s musical works. The performances
were captured by Basement Recordings days before,
and in one instance, mere moments before they
took the stage for the prestigious annual steelband
music panorama competition.
The recordings
capture, reproduce and present an unrivalled
clarity with sonic realism, of a large steel
orchestra fielding between one hundred and one
hundred twenty musicians - unlike any other
steelband music recordings in its class.
This body
of musical work is a sterling addition for all
fans, educators, players, historians and fine
music collectors.

Females shine at East
Single Pan prelims
|
Trinidad & Tobago, W.I.
- Pan Trinbago’s National Steelband Panorama
2014 competition kicked off at the Arima
Velodrome on Thursday night with the preliminary
round for single pan bands in the eastern
region.
Of the 21 bands which faced the judges, three
tuners—Herman “Guppy” Brown, Desmond “Mappo”
Richardson and Leonard Lera—accounted for 11
with three, three and five, respectively.
Surprisingly most of the bands fielded the
maximum of 45 players and even though several
players performed with multiple bands they did
not make too much of a difference.
....Once
again the majority of players were both very
young and female, thereby outnumbering their
male counterparts almost three to one.

Hear the sound of the
drums from new group at SML
|
Virginia, USA
- Inside the Smith Mountain Lake Gallery on a
bitterly cold Saturday, Richard Rudolph directs
a group of 15-20 adults thumping on brightly
colored drums from the Island of Trinidad to
bring a new sound to SML. In a stark dichotomy,
members of the Parrot Pan Steel Band are dressed
in a mixture of overcoats and tropical themed
T-shirts to get into the spirit of the island
groove. Rudolph sits at a traditional drum set
in the center of room banging two drumsticks
together, occasionally walking around the room
to motivate people to feel the rhythm.
The Parrot Pan Steel Band has only been in
existence for a few months. Most of its members
never played steel drums before. With one
lesson, Rudolph gets them to play a song.

T&T steelpan newspaper
history now on the Web
.. Just a click away
|
Trinidad
& Tobago, W.I. -
The history of steelpan as chronicled in
Trinidad newspapers is now only a click away.
As a result of a grant from UWI and
collaboration between students at UWI and the
UWI library, more than 4,000 newspaper articles
related to the history of steelpan in T&T will
be uploaded to the Web.
Many articles can already be
viewed now with more being added in the next
several months.
The project is the brainchild
of steelpan historian and arranger Dr Jeannine
Remy, senior lecturer in the Department of
Creative and Festival Arts (DCFA) at UWI, St

|
Trinidad & Tobago, W.I.
- Musical tones resonated from various panyards
in the North as steelbands prepare their
Panorama repertoire in time for the Northern
Region National Large Conventional category
preliminary round of judging which will take
place at various panyards and communities on
February 8.
Caribbean Airlines Invaders Steel Orchestra is
one such steelband which was abuzz with activity
when the Express recently visited panyards. The
steelband will play “Jam It”, an Arddin Herbert
composition and arrangement with lyrics by
Rembunction (Roland Yearwood).
....Starlift Steel Orchestra is also in Panorama
preparation mode. There was a lot of activity at
the Mucurapo Road pan complex. The band will
play Machel Montano’s “Happiest Man Alive”,
arranged by Keith Salcedo.
The band’s
captain, Marius Caballero said the turnout of
players at the panyard has exceeded the
attendance roster of previous years. “From early
on we have seen a lot more players coming — more
than we have had in a number of years.

Steel Band to perform in
Armstrong Student Center
|
Oxford, Ohio, USA
- A small section of the Miami University Steel
Band will play an intimate show at the Armstrong
Student Center’s (ASC) Shade Family Room
Thursday.
The Steel Band is offered as a Miami class,
which affords students the opportunity to learn
steel percussion instruments, originally
developed from the Caribbean Islands.
The Steel Band is led by associate professor of
music, Chris Tanner, who originally founded the
group as a graduate student in 1994. It has
upwards of 20 members each semester, who put on
one concert, collectively, every term.
This performance, however, only features a
handful of experienced members due to the early
timing in the semester.

A mother of a six-week-old girl. An aspiring
interior designer. An avid lover of steelpan.
All these things, and so much more, described
15-year-old Aleah Cain who was brutally gunned
down on Tuesday night along Belmont Circular
Road, Belmont mere moments after she left her
home at Farrell Lane to get something to eat,
despite protests from her mother.
....She noted the 15-year-old

frequently play with the Farrell Lane City Kids

Paul shines a joyous
light on the steel pan
|
Bermuda -
Paul Smith is a man on
a mission: to change everything you think you
know about the steel pan.
The 31-year-old musician uses the steel pan to
play everything from John Legend’s ‘Ordinary
People’, Drake’s ‘Find Your Love’ and
contemporary soca hits like Bunji Garlin’s
‘Ready For De Road’ (Differentology) and
‘Bacchanalist’ from Kerwin Du Bois.
He is looking to inspire a new generation of
musicians to play the steel pan and is currently
teaching the craft to four young people between
the ages of 15 and 18.
Mr Smith said: “The steel pan in Bermuda used to
be really big, but there was never a graduated
system and it wasn’t really introduced in the
school system back then, so there was no
generation to come up behind those older players
and turn it into what it could be.

launched into a Motown medley of “My Girl,”

rockers Toto. Over a dozen Music Haven students
joined Steel Band members for a couple of Bill

De Fosto leading the way
with selections for Panorama
|
Trinidad & Tobago, W.I.
- This year has seen a proliferation of pan
songs like no other. Already there are well over
50 songs and the
list
keeps growing every day.
Every year new composers and singers come to the
fore just to be in the game but with all these
songs only a handful are played at the annual
National Panorama competition.
The composer who leads the pack this year is one
who has been at the forefront in pan songs, The
Original De Fosto Himself. He has two songs “In
De Minor” and “Pan
in the Atmosphere”.
Six steel orchestras will be going to the
savannah with “In De Minor” including bp
Renegades with Duvone Stewart as arranger; Arima
Angel Harps with Shelton C Besson; Supernovas
with Amrit Samaroo as arranger, and Andre White

However,

Promoters: Yes to steel,
brass....but
|
Trinidad & Tobago, W.I.
- Fete promoters say they would welcome the
return of steel pan and brass bands to their
events but cited logistics as a major reason why
most events feature singers as their only form
of entertainment.
“The logistics of arranging transport for a
steel band, getting a proper stage set up for
them, the lighting and sound, tends to take more
time and effort than when booking a performer,”
Colin Greaves, general manager of Island People
Mas told Newsday yesterday. He also spoke of the
cost of hiring a steel or brass band, which
depends on its size and how long their set is
(performance time).
“This may range from $15,000 to $30,000 and
while some acts may charge similar amounts, when
you add the logistics to that, many promoters
find it easier not to hire a pan side or brass
band.”

Hometown: School of the
Arts Collects Electronics to Support Steel Drum
Ensemble
|
Williamsburg, Virginia, USA
- With many residents receiving new gadgets for
the holidays, the York County’s School of the
Arts is collecting the old ones to turn into
arts funding.
....Milne said the school will accept
electronics of any size, including tablets, ink
cartridges and cell phones — no matter how
advanced their technology.
The school then works with a company who
exchanges the items for money. Milne said the
payout could be $1 per piece, or much larger for
more valuable devices. The company either
recycles the materials or refurbishes them for
use in other countries that might not have
access to the same products.
....The
funds will go to the school’s steel drum rhythm
group, which partners with the Virginia Arts
Festival. The ensemble has about 20 members from
the City of Williamsburg, and James City and
York counties, and receives professional
instruction.
The group
costs $10,000 a year, which the school system is
unable to fund, Milne said.

less than four out of ten steel orchestras for

song.
Now, Super Blue’s brought
back the main track from his 1989 EP (extended
play) album of the same name - “Mrs. Pan.” With
a partial re-working of the verses, it’s been
re-released as Spankin - A Tribute, featured

Steel-drum icon’s visit

Yarmouth, Massachusetts, USA -
Born in Trinidad and later

traveling symphony for five years by the time he

accepted Mattacheese Middle School music teacher

Gabriel’s visit came in the
form of an early Christmas gift on Friday, Dec.
20, and was joyfully received by the Mattacheese
student body.
....Last January, Graf
introduced the district’s first steel-drum
program. “During school hours I offered a
12-week enrichment class so students could be
steeped in the culture and history of steel
drums while learning to play them,” he says.
“The class was open to all students, no matter
