“The Bradley
Years”
The
Bradley Years represent the definitive collection
of steelband music arrangements and performances
for a large steel orchestra. This collection
showcases seven classic arrangements from the
master arranger Clive Bradley. Bradley
is considered to be the best steelband music
arranger ever by many, including his peers.
In addition, the arrangements are performed
by one of the finest steelbands in the world,
New York’s Pantonic Steel Orchestra. Clive Bradley
had a very special relationship with Pantonic.
This orchestra clinched the title of panorama
champions five times in seven years - performing
Bradley’s musical works. The performances
were captured by Basement Recordings days before,
and in one instance, mere moments before they
took the stage for the prestigious annual steelband
music panorama competition.
The recordings
capture, reproduce and present an unrivalled
clarity with sonic realism, of a large steel
orchestra fielding between one hundred and one
hundred twenty musicians - unlike any other
steelband music recordings in its class.
This body
of musical work is a sterling addition for all
fans, educators, players, historians and fine
music collectors.

group performed at Disney World in Florida last
year. Unlike last year, however, the group will
be performing not one but two shows — one on Christmas
Day and the second on Dec. 26.
“We’re a part
of their Christmas parade show that they have every
year,” Thwaites said. “But we’re not a marching
band, so they’re figuring out a stationary place
for us to perform.

Pan With The Saints getting
better and better
|
Trinidad
& Tobago, W.I. - Although
only in its second year, Pan With The Saints is
fast becoming one of the better quality pan productions.
Patrons who attended this event last week Saturday
at the St Mary’s College Big Yard thoroughly enjoyed
the performances of the six bands.
Opening the
proceedings was the SJC/CIC Combined band (Symphony
of Saints) which placed third in the Schools Panorama
competition earlier this year. The students’ first
offering of “Sleigh Ride” brought on the Christmas
feeling and they followed up with “Black Cake and
Sorrel”, arranged by the CIC music teacher, Michelle
Marfan-Urquhart who also arranged the next number,
Jahaji Bhai by Brother Marvin. After playing a medley
of Christmas songs, the band ended with their Panorama
song, Trini, arranged by former SJC student and
All Stars panist,
Mia Gormandy who is furthering her studies in
musicology in Florida.
....Skiffle
Steel Orchestra was not only making it’s debut,
but was the first South band to perform at the event.

Odysseys: Steelpan art helped
her bring Guyana to Pittsburgh
|
Pittsburgh,
Pennsylvania, USA - ...Ms.
Solomon’s family moved to the Steel City in 1984.
Leigh was 5 years old when her parents decided to
settle here after moving to the Bronx in New York
City from Georgetown, Guyana, on the northern coast
of South America.
Two things
made the transition easier. First was the family.
....Second
was her father’s passion — a steelpan. It bound
the family together. Mr. Solomon was a known steelpan
maker in Guyana, and the instrument helped the family
build ties to Pittsburgh because the girls were
performers. Audiences clapped and that helped Ms.
Solomon and her sisters build confidence.
A steelpan
was also an ice-breaker. When people in Pittsburgh
would learn that the girls were performers, they
would ask, “So do you sing?” That question motivated
Ms. Solomon and her sisters to talk about steelpans,
Guyana, their family and their culture. “No,” they
would say, “we play the steelpan.”
