“The Bradley
Years”
The
Bradley Years represent the definitive collection
of steelband music arrangements and performances
for a large steel orchestra. This collection
showcases seven classic arrangements from the
master arranger Clive Bradley. Bradley
is considered to be the best steelband music
arranger ever by many, including his peers.
In addition, the arrangements are performed
by one of the finest steelbands in the world,
New York’s Pantonic Steel Orchestra. Clive Bradley
had a very special relationship with Pantonic.
This orchestra clinched the title of panorama
champions five times in seven years - performing
Bradley’s musical works. The performances
were captured by Basement Recordings days before,
and in one instance, mere moments before they
took the stage for the prestigious annual steelband
music panorama competition.
The recordings
capture, reproduce and present an unrivalled
clarity with sonic realism, of a large steel
orchestra fielding between one hundred and one
hundred twenty musicians - unlike any other
steelband music recordings in its class.
This body
of musical work is a sterling addition for all
fans, educators, players, historians and fine
music collectors.

Panorama KarmaThis Is Not Your Ordinary Culture
|
Trinidad
& Tobago, W.I. -
A decent church-going fella, this arranger named Leon Smooth Edwards. Also a tough guy in the panyard. Tough guys don’t dance. But you bet Trinis and pan lovers around the world can’t hold their excitement until Trinidad All Stars (TAS) trots out a slo jam a la Woman on the Bass, the band’s folksy masterpiece. The republic seems to have cornered the future of the confectionary market in a piece of music that lasts eight minutes but, like Woman on the Bass and Curry Tabanca, it could be years before the latest treat turns mouldy. If ever.

Finals Results for
Small Steel Orchestras - La Horquetta Pan Groove
Takes First Place With Arranger Kion Robinson
|
Trinidad
& Tobago, W.I. -
La Horquetta Pan Groove pulled off a major
victory playing De Fosto’s ‘In De
Minor’ arranged by Kion Robinson. The pan
musicians are the new champions in the Small
steel orchestra category for their country’s
2017 Panorama season. Winning arranger Kion
Robinson has worked with the band since 2011,
while the music organization itself is no
stranger to winner’s row, having had a five-year
reign as Single Pan Band Champions from
2006–2010. They moved up to the small steel
orchestra category in 2011 in the
then-first-time Panorama collaboration with
Robinson.
In winning the title, La Horquetta Pan Groove
dethroned 2016 title-defenders Arima Golden
Symphony which had to settle for second place.
Tying for second were Laventille Serenaders
which came second for the second year in a row.

Large Band First at the Pan Finals
by Ray Holman |
Trinidad
& Tobago, W.I. - Prime time is always reserved for your main act which in this case, is the large band category. The bands should not be playing to a sparse audience during the wee hours of the morning. It is unfair to the musicians, the audience and the sponsors. I know for a fact that some sponsors feel cheated out of the advertising they expect to realize from sponsorship, simply because the audience is greatly depleted when their band finally performs.
It might be too late for implementation to have the medium and large band categories perform on separate nights, however I would strongly recommend that the large bands be allowed to play first, beginning with this years’ Panorama Finals show on Saturday. Patrons would then leave the Panorama event with a heightened sense of satisfaction in getting their money’s worth. If there is insistence on having both medium and large bands perform on the same night, obviously one category will suffer and it should not be the large band category as it is the category that the vast majority of patrons paid to hear.

David Hall Gives A
Young Steel Plan Player The Surprise Of His Life:
A Full Scholarship To Attend UVI
|
St.
Croix, USVI - Kevin
Williams, Jr. has been playing steel pan for a long
time although the youngster is still in 9th grade.
His talent sees him serenading incoming tourists
at the territory’s various ports; he has traveled
to Denmark to perform; Mr. Williams is a sought-after
performer at many events year-round, and last year
captured the territory’s –and the world’s — attention
when he performed “Virgin Islands Nice” alongside
Pressure Busspipe at the St. Thomas Carnival Village.
....But no
one was expecting what happened yesterday, not even
Mr. Williams. “I’m still very much in shock. I am
so thankful to Dr. Hall and the entire VI community
for the [love] and support,” Mr. Williams said.
He was referring to University of the Virgin Islands
President David Hall, who surprised Mr. Williams
with a full scholarship to attend UVI during Mr.
Hall’s remarks at the 2017 Agricultural Fair opening
ceremony on Saturday, where the institution’s steel
pan program, Mr. Hall said, although already robust,
would be built around Mr. Williams.

annual National Junior Panorama steelband competition

steelband organizations from around the twin-island
nation. Anticipation is usually high for folks around
the world who cannot be physically in Trinidad,
and so log on to the internet to watch and listen
to these bands. It is the gathering of the largest
number of the best youth steel orchestras anywhere,
and they participate in their annual competition,
showcasing both the awesome talent of the young
pan musicians of Trinidad & Tobago, and the genius
of the steelpan music instrument.
There is only
one thing wrong. The Trinidad and Tobago cultural
ministry forgot to ensure access to, or lacks sufficient
interest in providing - an internet stream for the
world to see these young musicians at their best.

Elizabeth “Liz” Mannette was tired of getting
lost. Setting out to visit a new panyard was always
a wearisome adventure because she would often have
to turn back when she could not readily find the
location.
....It often
involved walking in circles around the Queen’s Park

the band’s location before the big stage performance.
In her search for a solution, Mannette realised
she was not alone.
....For Panorama
2017, Mannette was encouraged to launch a mobile

The new PanCrawl
digital app aims to show the exact location of all

Asami remembered on anniversary
of death |
Trinidad
& Tobago, W.I. - One
year has passed since 31-year-old Japanese national
Asami Nagakiya was found dead at the Queen’s
Park Savannah.
The young
woman, who came to Trinidad to play the steelpan
and take part in the carnival celebrations was found
murdered on February 10 last year. She had been
coming to Trinidad on her own for eight years, to
play the tenor pan. She last played with PCS Nitrogen
Silver Stars but, also played with several other
bands, including the Woodbrook Modernaires and Desperadoes.
Last year
was her first time ever playing mas. It was, unfortunately,
her last time. Her death remains among a long list
of unsolved murders in which police struggle to
find a breakthrough.

|
Trinidad
& Tobago, W.I. - The present
impasse between Pan Trinbago Inc. T.C and the Ministry
of Community Development Culture and the Arts through
the NCC, is very unfortunate given the kind of outstanding
contributions that the Steelpan fraternity have
been making towards the recognition and development
of Trinidad and Tobago at home and abroad for over
fifty years. Only people without a clear sense of
history, and those who are deeply rooted in a slavish
colonial mentality, will find satisfaction and pleasure
in the destruction of an institution that have been
able to raise itself from the dump heap of society
to become world renowned, and received at home the
Humming bird medal and the Trinity Cross. Yet, you
hear calls from the misguided and uninformed few,
to mash up Pan Trinbago and form something else.

Song for Panorama 2017
‘Full Extreme’
sung by “Ultimate Rejects
featuring MX Prime”
|
Global
- ‘Full Extreme’ is a
runaway smash for the 2017 Carnival season, performed
by Ultimate Rejects featuring MX Prime. There
is even talk of potential Road March honors come
Carnival Monday and Tuesday.
It is also
the tune of choice for two ‘legacy’ steel orchestras
for the 2017 Panorama season. Trinidad All Stars
and Invaders steel orchestras, along with Merry
Tones participating in the small band category have
each selected the track in their quest for Panorama
glory.

round of the National Panorama competition.

MX Prime’s “Full Extreme.” Exodus Steel Orchestra
came in third place with 274 points for its performance
of Pelham Goddard’s/Terrance “BJ” Marcelle’s arrangement

Preliminary Results for Medium
Conventional Steel Orchestras - Trinidad & Tobago
Panorama 2017 |
Trinidad
& Tobago, W.I. - In
what has been a Panorama season which brought a
complete change as to how the preliminaries were
conducted, the Medium steel orchestra grouping maintained
one constant from 2016; that being the number of
bands moving on to the semi finals in the category.
Fourteen steel
orchestras out of the twenty-eight which managed
to get out of the gate, will grace the stage at
the Big Yard at the Queen’s Park Savannah, Port-of-Spain,
this coming weekend on Sunday February 12 in the
next phase of competition.
The ‘change’
was the judging in the pan yards of the medium (and
small) steel orchestras - instead of meet-ups at
'regional' venues.
