“The Bradley
Years”
The
Bradley Years represent the definitive collection
of steelband music arrangements and performances
for a large steel orchestra. This collection
showcases seven classic arrangements from the
master arranger Clive Bradley. Bradley
is considered to be the best steelband music
arranger ever by many, including his peers.
In addition, the arrangements are performed
by one of the finest steelbands in the world,
New York’s Pantonic Steel Orchestra. Clive Bradley
had a very special relationship with Pantonic.
This orchestra clinched the title of panorama
champions five times in seven years - performing
Bradley’s musical works. The performances
were captured by Basement Recordings days before,
and in one instance, mere moments before they
took the stage for the prestigious annual steelband
music panorama competition.
The recordings
capture, reproduce and present an unrivalled
clarity with sonic realism, of a large steel
orchestra fielding between one hundred and one
hundred twenty musicians - unlike any other
steelband music recordings in its class.
This body
of musical work is a sterling addition for all
fans, educators, players, historians and fine
music collectors.

Unsponsored bands get
$1.3m from ministry
|
Trinidad
& Tobago, W.I. -
Pan Trinbago president Keith Diaz said the $1.3
million which was received for 115
community-based steelbands will ensure Carnival
participation in areas beyond Port of Spain.
Diaz was
speaking yesterday after Pan Trinbago East Zone
chairman Carlon Harewood collected the cheques
from Culture Minister Dr Nyan Gadsby-Dolly, at
Nicholas Tower, Independence Square, Port of
Spain.
He was
also accompanied by North Zone chairman Gerard
Mendez and South/ Central official David Balbosa.
Community steelbands normally play at J’Ouvert
celebrations in the respective areas.
‘The money
goes towards the unsponsored bands,’ said Diaz.
‘It is a tad late but it will help them. They
may not come to Port of Spain but they put in a
lot of energy and time into making Carnival
enjoyable and successful. They play in a number
of areas like Brazil, Biche, Mayaro and Tamana.
Panists
come from Point Fortin, Cumuto, Erin and Sangre
Grande. In Tobago, they play from Roxborough to
Black Rock.’

be down to the wire for title defenders Trinidad
All Stars as they are currently in fourth place,

do not count these “All Stars” out. However challenger

own lead going into final night competition.
The last time
Renegades were Panorama champions was 1997- twenty-one
years ago. Playing ‘Year For Love’ - could 2018
be the ‘Year For Renegades and Duvone Stewart?’

National Panorama 2018
|
Trinidad
& Tobago, W.I. - In the
medium band category - fourteen steel orchestras
out of the twenty-five which eventually participated
in the preliminary phase of the 2018 Trinidad and
Tobago National Panorama - will move on to the semi-final
competition at the Big Yard at the Queen’s Park
Savannah, Port-of-Spain, this coming weekend on
Sunday January 28.
This is the
second year running that the style of judging in
the pan yards was applied to the medium (and small)
steel orchestras - instead of meet-ups at 'regional'
venues. Prior, this was the case of the large conventional
steel orchestras, where judges visited those pan
yards, generally with a caravan of supporters in
tow.

Female pan pioneer, 79, still
going strong
|
Trinidad
& Tobago, W.I. - To say
that panist, lecturer, pan pioneer
Daisy James-McClean has paid her dues in the
steel band world is an understatement. The 79-year-old
passed through the infamous bottle and stone pelting
steel band wars from the 50s, with bands such as
Casablanca from Belmont, Invaders from Woodbrook
and Tokyo from John John, dodging hails of missiles,
running and hiding from police with her brothers
in an era where men were stigmatized as “bad johns”
in steel band. It was a rarity in the early days
for a woman to be playing pan, getting licks with
a broomstick and pot spoon from her mother and running
away in secret to play the instrument she loved.

‘The Jamettery’
sung by David Rudder
|
Global
- ...In the early days,
David Rudder acquired a reputation as a back-up
singer in the calypso tent run by Lord Kitchener,
while earning his living as an accountant with the
Trinidad Bus Company. Rudder’s first big break came
when Christopher “Tambu” Herbert, lead singer with
Charlie’s Roots, fell ill after an exhausting tour
of Guyana and suggested his friend Rudder as a temporary
replacement.
Rudder stayed
on as a co-lead singer, and built a reputation for
his scintillating performances. His exposure to
Shango and the Pan Yards influenced his music, he
was also influenced by Jazz and African artists
such as Yossou N’Dour, Alpha Blondy. He is known
as one of the few band singers who wrote all his
own songs.

Nailah Blackman and her camp for dropping her song,
‘Sokah’, as the tune of choice for Phase II Pan

Sharpe told

He said he
heard ‘Hello’ at a Christmas party in the panyard

“It is a great

So in this
