Clive Bradley
Arranger
Desperadoes Steel Orchestra
2005 T&T Panorama Season

Date: 1.18.05

Once again, Desperadoes Steel Orchestra is in high spirits with a Clive Bradley arrangement of their Panorama selection "Action" from Emmanuel "Oba" Sinnette. Speaking with When Steel Talks , Bradley calls Oba a "competent composer," and a "musician" one who understood and knew music that was suitable for pan,  and for steelband arrangements.  Oba even visited the pan yard,   as opposed to other artists who would call Bradley and tell him they had a "pan tune."  The arranger has been with Desperadoes since 1968, and he arranged for the steel orchestra for many of the years since then.   Bradley arranged six of the ten Despers panorama winners in their history, and two of those victories were with Oba's selections - "In My House" (1999) and "Picture on The Wall" (2000).

The vibes in the Desperadoes pan yard are good, and Bradley says that "everybody is dancing." He said that the controversy swirling around the option for bands to chose music from prior years did not mean much to him.  Desperadoes' consensus was that Oba's
"Action" was the right choice.  Bradley had started the arrangement some time ago, and said that he could have been finished by "Boxing Day" (December 26, 2004).  So comfortable was he that he found himself with nine and a half minutes of arranged music, forgetting another rule that came into effect in 2004, which shortened the competition piece from ten to eight minutes.  "Fortunately, I arrange in modules, so all I had to do was 'drop' a couple of them."

For the preliminary pan yard judging which, for Desperadoes, took place on Saturday January 15, Bradley said that by then the arrangement had been ninety percent complete, and was strong enough to confidently propel the band into the next stage of competition.   With semi finals coming up next, Bradley acknowledged that there would be a few changes to come as the Finals came closer.  The arranger is pleased at the band's progress, and is looking forward to great things for 2005.
