Seion Gomez  and Merrytones Looking To Defend Their Title in Panorama 2006

2006 T&T Steelband Panorama Season

Trinidad & Tobago - Seion Gomez  is one of three arrangers affiliated with Northern Illinois University (NIU), participating in this year's Trinidad and Tobago steelband music panorama competition.  He also enters this year's event as the arranger of the defending small conventional steel orchestra category champions Merrytones Steel Orchestra.  Last  year, his work and the band's interpretation and performance won them the national title from a field of their peers.

For 2006, the band is performing the popular "Colours Again" sung by Destra Garcia.  Seion's teacher at NIU Liam Teague introduced him to the song. The arranger is quite pleased with the way the band has come together and sounds right now.

Gomez is from Diego Martin in the western part of Trinidad, which is also home to Merrytones.  Gomez' father is an original member of Phase II Pan Groove, and Seion himself was originally a "born and bred" Phase 2 (Len "Boogsie" Sharpe) player.  Somewhere in the mid-nineties, Gomez joined Merrytones and played with them for about one year.

NIU professors have granted Seion the flexibility and given him the support to allow him the time to arrange for Merrytones while completing his required course work and studies.  Seion is completing the second year in his pursuit of his masters degree.  Merrytones is confident in their ability to repeat last year's success.
