Kenrick and Kenneth Headley
|
Father/Son duo Kenrick and Kenneth Headley are offering Pan Pa Lam (A Salute to Errol Ballytine) for the 2011 panorama season. The tune encompasses many elements that people can recognize from Bally’s hits.
The title of the tune Pan Pa Lam comes from another one of Bally’s hits Pam Pa Lam, but with a twist. It highlights the confusion, commotion, and uproar from the crowds when they hear their favourite bands playing Bally’s music in de Savannah for Panorama.
Kenrick Headley with his brother Harold were members of the Esso Tripoli Steelband that toured with Liberace under the tutelage of Father Jon Sewell and manager Hugh Borde. During this time, Kenrick became an in-house arranger with Tripoli arranging many of their popular music tunes like the Jackson Five’s “I want you Back.”
After touring with Tripoli, Kenrick maintained his presence in the Steelpan fraternity, assuming arranging duties together with his brother Harold (The Headley Brothers,) for Flamingoes, Exodus (1982-86), Invaders (1987-88), Birdsong (1991-94), Humming Bird Pan Groove (2000), Arima Angel Harps (2001-2002) and Tunapuna Tipca.
Under the watchful eye of his father Kenrick, son Kenneth Headley grew up in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada wanting to be a steelpan arranger himself. He has played in numerous Panoramas in Trinidad with Birdsong, Exodus and Invaders steel orchestras, starting at the tender age of 5. Now as a young man, Kenneth is looking at gaining his own voice as a steelpan soloist, arranger, and composer. Kenneth attributes his influences to both his famous father and uncle (The Headley Brothers), former New York-based classmates Khuent Rose and Freddy Harris, III, along with Leon “Foster” Thomas, and other young arrangers like Amrit Samaroo, and Duvone Stewart.
The Headley’s would like to give a special thank you the Frank “Bambi” Holder, Sam Hope and Ulan “Maffie” Atwell for their contributions to the song.
