(When Steel
Talks) just
completed
taking in a
portion of
the NIU
(Northern
Illinois
University)
steelband
concert from
DeKalb,
Illinois,
through the
NIU School
of Music’s
web
broadcasting
of the
event.
This was
before the
stream came
to an
unexpected
and
premature
end. Enter
the perils
of
technology.
As is
customarily
the case, the
When Steel
Talks family
took
advantage of
the
opportunity
to watch the
show.
The viewers
were literally
on tap from
every part
of the globe,
as the web
analytics data
revealed to
WST staff in real
time.
Among the
areas
represented
were
Australia,
Finland, UK,
several
countries in the
Caribbean,
France, Canada - and
all over the
US.

NIU
continues to
lead the way
with higher
education
web
broadcasts
of steelband
concerts. They are
forging new
territory,
possibilities
and
creating
higher expectations. For about an
hour and
forty-five
minutes the
viewers were
given
front row seats
to a very
engaging
concert led
by world-renowned
panist and
NIU Associate
Professor of
Music,
Liam Teague.

Unfortunately,
as is the
potential
hazard of
any
technology,
the
broadcast
was cut
short as the
NIU School
of Music internet
feed terminated
for reasons
that were unknown
to us. But
based on the
overall comments from the WST
site and
facebook
stream box -
folks were
pleased with
the quality
of the
concert
broadcast
and
performances.

enthusiasts
came online
for the
second half
of the
program,
belatedly
joining the
early-birds
who had been
already
“seated
virtually”
since the
beginning. The concert

University
Steelband
took the
stage first
and
delivered
the very
familiar “I
Gotta
Feeling”
popularized
by the
Black Eyed
Peas,
as their
first
selection.
Bob Marley’s
“Stir It Up”
followed
immediately
after; these
pan
performances were very
enthusiastically
received.
Held in the
NIU Music
Building’s
Boutell
Memorial
Concert
Hall, the
show
continued
with the
NIU
Steelband
which took
the stage
after, under the
direction of
both Liam
Teague and
Cliff
Alexis.
Also
appearing
and
performing
was NIU
music
professional,
percussionist
Robert
Chappell.
Chappell and
Teague have
recently
released a
CD entitled
Open Window.
The NIU 2010
Fall
Steelband
concert also
showcased
US Virgin-Islands-born
panist Victor
Provost, who
now makes
his home on
the US
mainland.
NIU music
faculty
member Greg
Barrett also
performed on
clarinet
alongside
Brazilian
percussion
master
Geraldo de
Oliveira.
