Trophies at stake in the inaugural CLACC-C PanFest
Brooklyn, New York, USA - One of the great developments in this year’s Pan season was the introduction of a Junior Panorama in New York. The competition is the brain child of CLACC-C (Carlos Lezama Archives and Caribbean Cultural Center). Participating in this 1st annual PanFest junior steelpan competition were C.A.S.Y.M., New York Pan Stars, Harmony, Pantonic and Metro steel orchestras.
The competition holds great promise for the future as many major New York area steel orchestras already have some active form of a youth component. In addition, the event provides both the young players and the up-and-coming arrangers another viable outlet to display and nurture their musical talents.
The inaugural and 2014 winner was New York Pan Stars with a fabulous rendition of their junior panorama piece Play De Music by KES (Kes the Band), arranged by Marc Brooks. They received $1,500 for their efforts. Coming in second was Pantonic with their performance rendition of Fiery as arranged by Keith Roberts - they copped a $1,000 prize. CASYM was third with their rendition of Powder Puff arranged by Jahlani Roberts and Orrin Andrew. Metro played Haunted arranged by Wilfred Kieal, Sr. and took home $300 for their rendition. Harmony opted for Spankin’ – A Tribute and also received $300 for their performance of the Michael Joseph-arrangement.
This junior Panorama event holds much promise for the future as many of the other New York steelband franchises expressed interest in part taking in next year’s event.
