LYRICS

Verse 1

Where they came from
The people would like to know
They came as protection
For Trinidad and Tobago
Now known as the Pan,
They took every form
Created steel band, yes - out of the norm
It was considered, an endangered specie
The colonial masters, then became angry
They couldn’t believe
What they was hearing;
Music coming from ole pitch oil tin
The melodies was echoing, just like violin.

Chorus

The gods of the unknown is the steel pan
So they saying, God is a Trini
Hear dem say, God is a Trini
The gods of the unknown from this island
Hear they saying
God is a Trini, God is a Trini
If a storm coming, dat ent nothing
The people does boast
God is a Trini, God is a Trini
When it start forming, see them jumping
Feteing from coast to coast, God is a Trini, God is a Trini
The steel pan came from heaven
They say, yay yay yay
God won’t send no hurricane down dey, no
God is a Trini - so they say
God is a Trini, everyday
God is a Trini, are you sure
God is a Trini, tell me more.

Verse 2

The birth of this pan
The intervention of guided hands
A miracle creation
By the gods of this unknown band
They journey to the earth
To safeguard La Trinity
Got into the minds
Of Ellie Mannette and Winston Spree
They started to create
From an invisible slate
Notes already debate, notes already relate
It was de gods designing dey plan
To make sure they cover this land
These instruments, Harps of Gold
Known as the steel pan… yeah

Chorus

Verse 3

If we don’t appreciate
What the gods have done for we
Then ‘God is a Trini’
…Will be God - we worse enemy
We still have some time
To stop all this crime
With this instrument
That the gods invent
Doh ray me far so la te doh ray me
Te la far so ray, hear what the gods say
The steel pan is for all mankind;
No country must be left behind
The gods of the unknown
They not color blind…no

Chorus 3

The gods of the unknown is the steel pan
So they saying God is a Trini
 - hear them
God is a Trini (O Lord)
The gods of the unknown from this island
Hear, they saying, God is a Trini
God is a Trini
If a storm coming, dat ent nothing
The people does boast, God is a Trini
God is a Trini
When it start forming, see them jumping
Feteing from coast to coast, God is a Trini, God is a Trini
The steel pan came from heaven
They say yay yay yay
God won’t send no hurricane down dey, no
God is a Trini
So they say - God is a Trini, everyday
God is a Trini, are you sure
God is a Trini, more and more.

Winston Scarborough is considered by many to be one of the all-time great composers of steelband ‘panorama tunes.’

A performer artist himself, 2012 will mark the 34th year that Trinidad & Tobago’s Winston Scarborough (The Original DeFosto Himself - as he loves to be called) has been singing calypsos.  For him it was an uphill struggle to be recognized by the fraternity and public at large.

Abandoned by both his parents at the young age of 6 months, Scarborough was sent to the Tacarigua Orphanage in east Trinidad where he remained until age 17.  The experience in the orphanage would place an indelible stamp on him.

One of the most important aspects of DeFosto’s work as a calypsonian is the tributes he has paid in song to many of Trinidad & Tobago’s cultural icons; the late Lord Kitchener (calypsonian Aldwyn Roberts) would be one such with whom people are most familiar.

For 2010 The Original DeFosto Himself dropped two big musical ‘bombshells’ for Panorama: “Smooth Sailing” and “Pan on Fire.”  In 2011 he came back strong once more with “A Raging Storm;” “In She Rainorama;” “Desperadoes Coming Down” and “More Money for Pan.”

For the 2012 panorama season, DeFosto  has already released a couple tracks, including An Intervention of Hope (Lives Have Been Saved.  Yet another ‘witty ditty’ coming from the talented artist is the track featured here, Gods of The Unknown’-‘God Is Ah Trini’.
